The beginning of a new life

Ah, the feeling of getting up a 5 AM, lovely! *cough*

Ok, let me be perfectly honest with you, I am no early riser by default! I thrive by staying up until 5 AM in the morning while sleeping until I wake, whenever that is, very rarely before noon and never before sunrise.

That's going to change.

I have always been a fan of productivity. I hate having nothing to do. I hate being inefficient. I hate having only 24 hours a day. I have always been intrigued by the Uberman sleep schedule, but I am also a realist, and I am not going to be able to follow the Uberman sleep schedule. I am simply too busy to be able to go to sleep for 20 minutes every four hours every day, it wouldn't work when I'm at work, at the university, in the movies and so forth. But still, the aspect of having 2-3 hours more time each day has really caught my interest.

Likewise, I have always admired the people that were able to get up at 6 AM every day and be fresh for work, having already gotten their breakfast, excercised, read the papers and so forth. They were able to do all this while I simply met up at noon while still sleeping mentally, not having eaten any breakfast, without even nearing a paper as that would surely put me to sleep instantly.

I recently read a couple of blog posts by Steve Pavlina regarding how to become an early riser. Steve describes a life oddly similar to my own, at least before he made the decision to change his life. He describes the common errors one makes when trying to adapt to getting up early, common errors that I recognize myself.

Shortly after having read both Part I and Part II of Steves early riser guide I chose that I simply had to try this out myself. It is going to be a great challenge for me as I really lack the self discipline required to pull through such an endeavour, but what better way to build up some self discipline, and hopefully improve ones life in the meantime?

The clock is now 5:47 AM and I've had my shower and my breakfast, ready to get a couple of hours work in before I... have to meet for work. It was actually impressively easy to get up this morning, I woke up more or less by myself 15 minutes to 5, probably due to me thinking alot about having to get up at 5, even though I had no apparant reason to do so. My plan is to get up a 5 AM every day for at least the next month and then reassess my life and take notice of the changes that I hopefully will have experienced.

Getting these 2-3 hours more each day will also allow me to breath some life into this blog that has obviously and embarrasingly enough died out on me since I got back from Vegas. And yes, I also owe an article about the .NET security lecture that I've given at Aarhus and Aalborg University. Hopefully this extra time in the morning will allow me to write it within due time.
